The right mix depends on your livestock and your water supply. A blend outperforms a single species because different grasses cover different jobs: fast establishment, deep roots, palatability, and regrowth after grazing. Below are the mixes we stock for the most common Western Slope operations.

Cattle Pasture Seed

Seeding Rates, Coverage & Timing

Rates depend on the mix and the job. Mountain Pasture Seed Mix seeds at 25 to 35 lbs per acre for a managed stand, while open pasture and rougher ground run 50 to 100 lbs per acre. A 50 lb bag covers roughly 1/2 to 2 acres depending on which rate you use, so measure the ground you’re actually seeding before you order.

Timing is the other half. Early fall, from September into early October, is the strongest window for cool-season pasture on the Western Slope, with late spring as the backup.
