Can I Put Soil Conditioner on Top of Soil?

Yes. FoxFarm notes that soil conditioners can be used as a mulch topdressing, but recommends mixing Happy Frog into vegetable beds. Work approximately 3 inches into the existing soil each spring. For established plants, apply a smaller amount around the base and water well afterward.

Can Happy Frog Soil Be Used for Indoor Plants?

Happy Frog Soil Conditioner is meant for improving existing garden soil, not for use as a ready-to-use container mix. For houseplants, choose Happy Frog Potting Soil, which is formulated for pots. The conditioner belongs in garden beds or in-ground planting holes.

What's the Best Soil Conditioner?

For compacted vegetable beds or tired garden soil, Happy Frog is worth considering. Aged forest products and earthworm castings add organic matter that can help the soil hold moisture and drain better. FoxFarm also includes microbes and mycorrhizal fungi to support nutrient uptake. Choose a soil conditioner based on what your existing soil needs.

How Much Area Does a Bag of Happy Frog Soil Conditioner Cover?

One 3-cubic-foot bale covers about 36 square feet at 1 inch deep, or a 6-by-6-foot area. At 3 inches deep, it covers about 12 square feet. Measure the area of your beds, then use the depth to calculate how many bales you need.

What's the Difference Between Happy Frog Soil Conditioner and Happy Frog Potting Soil?

Happy Frog Soil Conditioner adds organic material to existing ground soil. Happy Frog Potting Soil is a ready-to-use growing medium for containers. Choose the conditioner for garden beds and in-ground planting, and the potting soil for indoor plants or container gardens.

Happy Frog combines organic materials with beneficial microbes to improve the conditions around plant roots. Its finely screened texture makes it easier to mix into heavy garden soil.

The main ingredients are:

Aged forest products: Add organic matter that improves soil texture, aeration, and moisture retention.
Earthworm castings: Contribute organic material and nutrients.
Bat guano: Supplies additional plant nutrients.
Beneficial soil microbes and mycorrhizal fungi: Included by FoxFarm to help increase root efficiency and encourage nutrient uptake.
Humic acids: May help plants absorb important micronutrients.

Adding organic matter can improve compacted soil structure, creating more space for air and water movement. This makes Happy Frog a useful soil conditioner for clay soil, particularly in garden beds where drainage needs improvement.

If you're unsure what a soil conditioner does, our guide explains how soil amendments work and when to use them. For more on improving heavy soil, see Rivendell's Colorado clay soil amendment guide.

How to Use Happy Frog Soil Conditioner

Use Happy Frog in vegetable beds, rows, raised beds, or planting holes. How you apply it depends on whether you're preparing a bed or planting something new.

Vegetable Gardens, Rows, and Raised Beds

For vegetable beds, FoxFarm recommends working approximately 3 inches of Happy Frog Soil Conditioner into the existing soil each spring.

For established plants, gently work a smaller amount into the soil around their bases without disturbing the roots. Water thoroughly afterward.

In-Ground Planting

For new shrubs, flowers, and other in-ground plantings, follow FoxFarm's instructions:

Dig the planting hole approximately two to three times the size of the root ball.
Add a layer of soil conditioner to the bottom of the hole.
Position the plant at the correct height, with the root ball at the appropriate soil level.
Backfill the hole using a 50/50 mix of native soil and Happy Frog Soil Conditioner.
Water thoroughly after planting.

For additional plant nutrition, FoxFarm recommends Happy Frog Jump Start Fertilizer alongside new plantings.
